A Family Built on Service

Aponte Sr, United States Army

Service has always been part of who we are. From my grandfather to my father, to my brother and sisters, to my cousins, uncles, and their children — our family has always answered the call to serve. Each generation has stepped forward in its own way, driven by love of country and pride in wearing the uniform.

For us, America isn’t just a place on a map — it’s home. It’s the land that gave us opportunity, purpose, and the freedom to build better lives. Every one of us who raised our right hand did it out of gratitude and pride for the ideals we defend and the people we protect.

I remember watching my father put on his uniform — the calm strength in his face, the weight of duty in his voice. He used to call cadence to me when I was small, that steady rhythm echoing through my memory even now. He shared stories of his own time in service. Though he didn’t serve thirty years, he made his time count. His pride and commitment lit a fire in me to follow that same path.

The military gave me direction, discipline, and a sense of purpose. It took a rough-edged, hard-headed kid and turned him into someone who understood what it meant to serve. It opened doors I never knew existed — education, travel, and opportunities that changed my life. More importantly, it gave me the ability to provide for my family and to give something back to the country that had given me so much.

My proudest moments now come from seeing that spirit continue in the next generation — my nephews who serve today, and my children who have served and plan to keep serving. For us, service isn’t a one-time act. It’s a lifelong commitment that shapes how we live, how we lead, and how we look after one another.

Some people serve because it’s a family tradition. Others do it to find purpose, to start over, or to build a better life. Whatever the reason, that decision to serve changes you. It teaches discipline, humility, and the meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood. You learn to stand for something — and to stand by someone.

Every veteran I’ve known has left an impression on me. Whether family, mentor, or stranger, they’ve shown strength, resilience, and compassion that remind me why our service matters. Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a reminder of who we are, what we stand for, and the generations who carried that torch before us.

To my brothers and sisters in arms — and to the American people — thank you. You’ve trusted us, supported us, and allowed us to serve something greater than ourselves.
